NASA’s LunaRecycle Challenge

What is the LunaRecyle Challenge? The NASA LunaRecycle Challenge is a $3 million two-phased competition focused on the design and development of recycling solutions that can reduce the amount of solid waste and improve the sustainability of longer-term lunar missions. As we expand our space explorations, we need to consider how waste streams, such as solid waste, can be minimized, as well as how it can be stored, processed, and recycled in a space environment so that little to no waste will need to be returned to Earth. This is where the LunaRecycle challenge comes into play. Those who register will be tasked at looking how we can reduce toxic outputs, make our explorations more efficient, and how we can use smaller-scale technologies to make terrestrial recycling more efficient.
